Pop Ads! At this point, pop-under ads are basically synonymous with adult websites and advertising. You also get them on gambling sites, I’ve noticed. For some reason, the mainstream hasn’t really adopted pop-under ads. I understand that they’re not exactly the sexiest types of ads, but they’re so much better than pop-overs that get in your way. Pop-under ads stay the fuck out of your way. Can you imagine tugging on your dick to some high-quality porn and right as you’re about to shoot your load, you get a pop-over ad urging you to buy crocs? I mean, there wouldn’t be a croc ad on an adult website; I just really wanted that joke to work. You’d end up busting your load to an image of crocs. You’d never be able to live that down.
As a porn webmaster, you want to make sure that the ads you serve are profitable, but you also want to know they’re not annoying. Annoying ads kill your retention rate. People are not going to linger on your site if you’re bombarding them with annoying shit that covers the content they’re trying to watch. It can also be really distracting when you rent out ad-space on the sides of every page with animated banners that draw the eye away from the smut. If I’ve got a pair of titties in view that I’m really enjoying, I don’t need Liya Silver over on the side waving at me, asking me to buy Viagra. I’m perfectly happy with the erection I’ve got, thank you.
Going Third-Party
You might have figured out that PopAds are a third-party advertising network, since you’ve probably never heard of them. That’s not on you and it’s not on them either. They’re quite good at what they do. It’s just really hard for third-party ad networks to become any kind of famous, since 99% of the world is on a monopoly like Facebook or Google Ads. Well, aside from the fact that porn is a no-go across mainstream ad channels, there are other reasons to consider using a third-party network. First up, you get very specific and narrow targeting with independent ad networks. Secondly, you know that they’re going to skim less of the top, because they’re up and coming and they’re trying to establish themselves in the industry.
If you’re reading this review, you’re probably pretty new to the porn webmaster world, so you can very much relate to a company that’s just trying to establish a foothold in the industry. That being said, they’re not tiny; they’re just third-party. They’re perfectly successful, though. I’ve seen a ton of ads come at me from PopAds across many different adult websites out there and they were always perfectly legitimate.
Going third-party might be the best choice if your site is entirely pornographic. Besides, PopAds aren’t necessarily adult. They service the mainstream too, but they support adult entertainment fully, as long as you abide by the law. This applies differently to different countries, what with the various laws and all, but it’s pretty easy to manage. I mean, you wouldn’t be running any kind of illegal shit on your site anyway, since you’re trying to appeal to as many countries as possible. You and PopAds are a match made in heaven.
The Psychology of Pop-Unders
These types of ads appear under the content you’re viewing in a separate window. That means they don’t crop up a new tab; they just slip away under the content. So, if you’re jacking off, it’s likely you really don’t have time or patience for ads, especially if those ads are for more porn. That’s what makes these types of ads interesting. Usually, the ads they run, at least the successful ones, don’t urge you to fap further – they give you something else to do. So, think about it. When’s the best time to target clients for clicks and conversions? Before, during or after a fap? Well, I’d say after, because that’s when they’re swimming in positive hormones. They’re on top of the world and they’re feeling fine, without a care in the world.
So, they close the porn, tab the fuck out and see the ad. Now that they’re in a good mood, they’re less likely to close the ad. They might actually check it out. Hell, they might even consider the offer. This is a great time to market games, toys, software, clothing, whatever the fuck. It’s good to catch people during their best mood and I know I’m in the best mood right after a decent wank session.
Dynamic Pricing, It’s Standard
You can’t bargain on the price of ad-space aside from choosing the different types of packages that PopAds offer. The pricing is entirely dynamic and comes from the money throughput from the actual advertisers, all the way back to you. They also tend to compete for ad-space, so that factors in automatically. If you’ve ever run any kind of PPC, you’ll get the gist of it pretty quickly. Suffice it to say, it always boils down to your actual traffic. The more traffic you have, the more money you rake in over time.
There might be some types of optimizations that you can perform to increase your profit, but it would have to be experimental. Maybe you offer several types of content and not all of it would lend itself very well to pop-under ads. Then, there’s also the consideration of how often you hit people with ads. You might think that having as many as possible would increase overall profits, but if that kills your retention rate, it might not be worth it.
Some people don’t really know much about how pop-under ads work and I have met many folks who think that pop-unders look shady. “I didn’t click this, so why is it here”. They tend to say shit like that. The bottom line is that you know as well as I do that pop-under ads are just as good if not better than conventional ones.
The Boasts and Offers
Like every ad network, PopAds have a long list of promises regarding how they do business. These aren’t too informative, especially if you’ve been around the block a few times. Still, we can at least take them at face value. They claim that their publishers' average revenue is never below $4, given 1000 unique US visitors. That doesn’t sound stellar, but it lines up with my experience. You’ll rarely get less than $4 at that rate. Still, you’re hoping for a lot more than just 1000 unique users, even though those are the hardest kind to cultivate over time. You might have to break out far past your standard outreach programs to ensure new users. That’s not to say that repeat visitors don’t generate revenue – they’re just hard to use as a metric for profit calculation over time.
I said that you don’t have control over how much things cost and that’s true, but, you can choose minimal bids. It’s a sort of threshold setting to bottleneck ultra-low ad values in case you straight-up want to avoid them. This is a great option for webmasters who value their visitors, especially when you’re serving expensive content. If you’re paying top dollar for the content featured on your site, you want to up the ante for the money you receive as well. It’s only natural.
On top of that, you get some service control regarding the number of ads that are shown to a unique user in a given time frame. I cannot stress how important this is. You do not want to bombard your users with ads. This will invariably piss them off. Also, make sure to disable pop-unders that have sound or active elements that can intrude on the fap time. These might seem alluring at first, with the high price and all, but if you’re running quality content, you’re just shooting yourself in the foot.
No Net Payment Threshold
This isn’t that huge of a boast, but it’s still nice to know that you don’t have to wait 30 or 60 days to get your hands on your money. PopAds let you withdraw your profits at any time you want, as many times as you want, with a tiny caveat. PayPal payments are available at above $5 a pop; wire transfers require above $500. I’ve seen this kind of trend pretty much everywhere. Transfers can be pricey and being paid for every cent you make just doesn’t make sense. The transfer fees would demolish your earnings. It’s only natural that they have an amount threshold. But, you can request as many payments as you want, so if you’re super successful, you can rest easy.
