If TikTok memes are to be believed, it seems like everyone wants attention. But even with so many social media sites, it's difficult to stand out among the crowd. Of course, if you're into posting and promoting adult material, your options are even more limited.
Sure, you can start a porn-centered blog on your personal website, but then there's the problem of getting traffic, building up a following, not to mention going through the headache of paying for exposure.
There was once a time when you could post pictures, get into discussions, and share explicit material on Tumblr, which was great. Even if you had little to no experience, you could acquire a fanbase in a matter of weeks.
Then sadly, the Great Purge of 2014 happened. After years of having a relaxed position on hosting adult media, they abruptly reversed that policy years ago and started pulling everyone's porn posts. This, along with waves of angry SJWs who kept starting drama, led to Tumblr's mass exodus.
Ever since, people have been looking for a replacement, and one of the websites in the running is BDSMLR. Is it worthy to inherit the mantle of the next social media and microblog site?
There is only one way to find out.
More Than a Blog, Not Quite a Forum, But Something Different
With something like eighty-four million people have left Tumblr between the Purge and now, and it looks like many of them went to Twitter to start over. The problem is that that platform is more ideal for quick, bite-sized texts and sexy GIFs.
And so, several smaller microblogs popped up on the net, all competing for disaffected Tumblrites. The old format was often retained, though most of the new ones tried to stand out by specializing. BDSMLR focused on grabbing up and connecting users who have a taste for the more extreme erotica.
Besides connecting other uses, you are free to post text, pictures, multimedia of whatever pervy stuff you want so long as you don't violate the terms of service.
If you are looking for inspiration on what you want to write about, your feed is constantly refreshed with algorithmically generated posts. So, even if you're coming up dry on what to put out there, getting inspiration shouldn't be hard.
Getting An Account Is Free But It'll Take Time
Registering doesn't require any money, and on its face, it doesn't ask too much to get started. After coming up with a nickname and submitting the typical login info, you can get started immediately. You don't have to verify your email address, just select some genres you like, and you can get started with your first post.
However, you will want to read the terms of service before you do get going. Running over three thousand words, it's a slough to go through, but worth it. While this is a microblog for fetish enthusiasts, they still have some damn robust user requirements.
Moving on, you'll find that there are simple, user-friendly tools for uploading whatever media you like. They've also got data updates on how many followers you have, how many likes you're getting, and other fun stuff to encourage you to keep going.
Not that it's likely to be a problem, but all of the typical tools to improve socializing are on the site. For instance, there is a contact page, a block button, and the such like. So, from a content maintenance standpoint, this site is adequate.
I Did Enjoy Particular Aspects of This Website
Besides what I've touched on so far, there are a series of other fine features worth talking about.
Although English seems to be the dominant language, there are no stipulations on posting in several languages. I've seen German and Spanish posts, which tells me that even more non-English languages are probably used.
This is a niche platform, but I thought it was fantastic to find out how the community has grown. Since the start of the Purge, this platform has amassed 87,000 users, and those may be old numbers. Seeing as this is the case, the more you post, the law of averages suggests you'll eventually get plenty of followers.
To wrap this bit up, it is nice that on this explicit microblog, you won't be yelled by social justice warriors over your kinks, and you won't have to be worried about being bombarded by Tumblr vomit.
There Are Some Features Certain Users Ain't Going to Like
This isn't so much a complaint as it is a sort of warning, but as you can probably guess, the site's intended to appeal to horny fuckers who have a bit of a darker side to them. Everything is legal, of course, but some of the content might be more extreme for some people.
That's a great thing for people who are far more oriented toward discussing and sharing BDSM and other weird smut. However, those of you who are more into blogging about more mainstream adult material, you might not get noticed much.
In fact, I've ever read that some users have been blocked for posting content that was too tame.
If you do upload some kinky shit, you'll likely get tons of positive feedback from the rest of the community. Just don't expect any comments. Other than direct messaging, you're SOL when it comes to engaging with your fanbase as you usually could on other platforms.
One last neat thing people who (for whatever reason) are still on Tumblr. BDSMLR has a tool that lets you quickly transfer your old Tumblr account to this one.
I've Got a List of Upgrades I Would Make
Hashtags work just as well on just about every social media platform, and it is nice that BDSMLR does have tools in place to (maybe) be promoted with new signups. However, I cannot believe that none of the webmasters went to the effort to add more ways to get your content out to other users.
Even with all of the tools at your disposal to monitor who you are following you, they don't have much other than a simple search engine to find other users. This means that it might be hard for people to find your posts, especially if you are a newb.
I would include a page that lists popular, trending, and most 'noted' posts. I'd also include a spot to give some shine to recently registered accounts and whatever they've contributed to the community.
The range of media you post is decent, but you can only upload videos files in an MP4 format. It would be nice if they allowed FLV and WMV videos as well.
Another drawback you should be aware of is that unlike a personal site, your options for monetizing your posts are non-existent. According to the site rules, you can't post affiliate links, which I would certainly change.
Lastly, this review is more of an appraisal of how this platform is supposed to run for bloggers. But I should mention that you might have to work extra hard to get offsite folks to join up, seeing as all of the adverts might put them off.
Do I Think That This Site Lives Up to Its Reputation?
This is another platform that will appeal to some and come off as extremely boring to others.
This whole experience lacks the same charm as Twitter, and it sucks that the community isn't that large. Still, if you're looking to post porny pictures and have a blog-style site, this is a decent website to use.
Hell, given the fact that they provide tools to automatically connect you with other users makes this site a much better option than getting a blog through Google.
To go back to a previous point, pretty much all of the content is of the more extreme variety. So if you do want to get famous, posting vanilla porn ain't going to cut it.
While certainly a decent alternative to post-feminism Tumblr, it's not a five hand ranking blog platform. Considering everything, I give it four hands and call it a decent adults-only blog.
