There are all sorts of writers out there who specialize in a variety of niches. In my experience, very few of them are equipped or comfortable with the material of a highly explicit nature. Even those, who are only a handful and are very good, tend to hyper-specialize.
Among those that do, some only focus on producing promotional copy, others are adult bloggers and social media experts, and others do just fantasy erotica and the like.
Another complication is finding the people who produce such material in a single place. Obviously, it’s going to be a fool’s errand to make a post in the local paper. You could scour the net on sites like Craigslist and post ads, but that’s only going to be marginally better than using traditional media.
Your best bet is to go to a freelancing website geared for connecting workers, in this case, writers, with potential clients. There are a decent number of them out there, and one I have not yet commented on is Guru.
It is one of the top freelance platforms on the web, but is it worth using if you are looking to find and hire an adult content writer? There is only one way to find out, keep on reading.
Get Connected To Tons Of Freelancers, Hypothetically
On paper, there is no shortage of workers on this platform. To date, there are almost 290,000 freelancers offering nearly half a million freelance services. Now that doesn’t mean that they will be champing at the bit to get the sort of work you are looking to provide.
From what I’ve seen, a relatively small handful of writers have it written in their bios. Just try and search, and you’ll see that there are some decent hits when you combine the ‘content writer’ and ‘adult content’ search terms. However, those are heavily mixed with general fiction and content writers.
In the existing pool of creators, most of the writers focus on copy with adult material. A handful of others are comfortable with producing romance and erotic novels.
The Price That Writer’s Ask For Varies
When it comes to quality, it’s hard to make a generalized statement. But the best way to see a freelancer’s competence is by checking their feedback section. If they don’t have any, that’s not necessarily a bad thing if they are new, but certainly should raise suspicion if they’ve taken several jobs.
As freelance boards go, it’s standard procedure for freelancers and clients to rate each other. It is hardly typical for people not to rate one another. As a rule, I think they don’t have any ratings or poor feedback; hunt around before hiring that person, if at all.
Using this feature is especially important considering that unlike Upwork, for example, there aren’t onsite tests that can prove a writer’s competency.
Moving on, the rate at which they charge varies quite a lot as well. Some charge only $5 an hour for assignments and flat rates starting at only $25. That may sound like a good deal, but this is the rate that a lot of non-native English speakers charge. This puts you at risk for paying a little, waiting a while, and getting a shit product.
Even if you think that it is worth it, you’re going to have to invest more time, money, or both to get your work corrected. A small 300-word blog may not be a big deal, but trying to take time to fix a 50,000-word erotic novel is a pain in the ass. Believe me, as someone who has done that, it is far more challenging and more frustrating than you might think.
The freelancers you should stick with charge closer to $10-50 an hour and have a flat rate starting at least around $50 or more per project. Even then, that does not mean that those who charge more mean they know what they are doing.
For instance, this ‘gem’ of a paragraph was composed by one user who charges a pretty penny for their work…
“After I suck his cock, he lay down on the ground feeling satisfied. I then wanted to clean my mouth, so I went down to the nearby creek to wash my mouth. Since I was there, I wanted to take a piss as well. Nobody’s around this creek so I pulled my skirt down, I had a long white T-shirt and a blue skirt by the way”
And no, I did not in any way modify or edit this paragraph. Someone claiming to be a professional adult writer posted that on their portfolio. Do you see now what I mean?
The Interface Is Similar To Freelancer
Overall, the web page’s format looks a lot like Freelancer to the point where it almost seems like a clone. In fact, I even had to check to make sure that this was not a rebrand of Freelancer. At any rate, when you make a post, it’ll show up in order of when it was posted.
Of course, there are filter tools available, so depending on how your post is structured, you might want to think twice about how you make it. I’ll get into this in further detail later, but be sure to pack as much relevant information into your post as possible so that people find it.
Posting A Job Is Simple Enough
Alright, getting help from a freelancer doesn’t require too many steps. Indeed, to get going, all you need to do is click on the post a job button at the screen’s top right.
Then you can fill out a form with the following information. Give the post a title that accurately describes your project and a thorough description of what you are looking for. For both, stay within the character limit but be as descriptive as possible.
It would also be a good idea to format and spell-check your post so there is no confusion about what you are looking for. If you have the materials and think it will help, you can also upload external files to illustrate your project. Alternatively, you can add a rough outline or a first draft of the document(s) that you need to have reworked.
This is very important, so don’t forget, but to get the best results, be sure to tag up your post. Throughout the posting form, you’ll see one area where you can type in and select categories to grab the attention of hungry writers. As a general rule, I would be sure to include ‘content writer’ and ‘adult content’ or something similar.
Then set your price point. In general, most posters offer a fixed rate or rather a range of money that freelancers can bid over. From what I have seen, freelancers prefer a set amount over other payment methods.
Alternatively, you can set your pay rate by the hour. This can be effective, but be sure to set a rough, if not a strict, deadline, so writers don’t milk the clock. No matter which option you choose, you can set whether or not your post is visible to everyone, Guru freelancers, or solely invites.
Furthermore, you can set whether or not you only want freelancers from specific locations or times can see view your post, along with how long you want your post to be up.
Get Started With This Site Just In A Few Taps
To make a post, you will need an account, but that doesn’t take much time. In fact, it can be done in a matter of mere moments. For example, you can signup using your Facebook, LinkedIn, or Google account.
Alternatively, you can register merely using your email and a unique password. Then just verify your account, and you should be all set. Like other platforms of this sort, everything is completely free.
My Personal Feelings And Recommendations Are As Follows
Typically, I find a few things to complain about a particular web service, and sometimes I have to go looking for things to bitch about. Rarely, I come across a specific website or service that has no flaws to speak of, but sadly that is not the case here.
In fact, it’s hard for me to come up with a ton of positive things to say about Guru. When it comes down to it, you can potentially hire freelancers who know how to produce steamy and sellable adult content. But with such a small pool of potential workers, the odds are not in your favor.
The existing writers who specialize in this area will charge you quite a bit. It can be argued that you get roughly an equal amount of quality for what you pay for. However, it would be considerably easier to find someone who is just as good on other websites that I’ve written about before. Some of my recommendations include:
Upwork
Pros
• Massive amount of potential workers.
• You have access to several selection tools.
• It’s possible to invite specialist writers.
Cons
• You’ll have to weed out teams and scammers.
Freelancer
Pros
• The filter and label tools are fairly advanced.
• I think this is probably one of the biggest freelance sites.
• You’ll easily find qualified non-English writers.
Cons
• This system tends to work on a bidding system.
Fiverr
Pros
• There is an impressive number of freelancers.
• You get a nice selection of specialists to search for.
• Even quality writers tend to be inexpensive.
Cons
• It might take time to find the right writer.
If you want even more details, just search the sites for those domain names. Anyway, with this selection level and at the price points offered, I’d suggest going to a different platform. Nonetheless, try it out just for variety’s sake and see what happens. Who knows? You might network with someone you forge a good relationship with.
